Periodontal Disease Treatment in Asheville, NC

Dr. Rebol and Dr. Sparks are your experienced restorative dentist in Asheville, NC. They can provide the care you need to restore your gum health following periodontal disease. Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is caused by an excess of bacteria surrounding your gum line.

If allowed to remain on your dental structures, this bacteria begins to eat away at your soft tissues. When this occurs, tooth loss may soon follow. To prevent tooth loss caused by gum disease, we offer comprehensive periodontal disease treatment in our Asheville, NC dentist office.

With our periodontal disease treatment options, we remove all of the diseased soft tissue from your smile. We do this using our laser dentistry technology, which allows us to operate on your soft tissues very painlessly. The dental lasers remove diseased tissue while also sealing off blood vessels immediately to prevent post-procedure bleeding.

We also offer scaling and root planning, which is a method of deep cleaning the pockets of your gums. This allows us to get rid of any bacteria that is being held within your gum line. Once this bacteria is removed, your gums will have a fresh start and we will be able to set you up with a preventative care plan to manage your gum health more effectively in the future.

The Stages of Gum Disease

There are four different stages of gum disease. The first, gingivitis is the only stage that’s reversible. Gum disease is extremely common in adults because this stage doesn’t have many noticeable effects. Usually, bleeding gums are the main tell. Gingivitis occurs when plaque and tartar build up at the gum line. The gums become inflamed and irritated.

Next is mild periodontal disease. At this point, it’s irreversible. The infection spreads and your jawbone begins to deteriorate. Treatment at this stage is usually scaling and root planing. The gum pockets that have begun to develop are completely cleaned of bacteria and debris. The tooth roots are smoothed down so that the gums can reattach to the bone.

Moderate periodontal disease finds the bacteria becoming more aggressive and getting into your bloodstream. Scaling and root planing is also the solution to manage this stage.

Severe periodontal disease is the last stage. At this point, the infection has fully progressed. Inflammation becomes an issue throughout your entire body. You experience extremely bad breath, bone loss, painful gums that ooze pus, and are at risk of tooth loss. Laser periodontal treatment or gum surgery are the only options to manage gum disease at this stage.
