Common Types of Dentures

Dentists have many kinds of dentures to choose from. Some of the most common include:

  • Complete Dentures: A complete denture restores the full upper and lower tooth arches. We may recommend a complete denture if all your teeth are missing. Extractions can also leave you with arches of missing teeth.
  • Partial Dentures: A partial denture replaces several missing teeth. Partials are not the same as dental bridges. A partial denture replaces multiple teeth in different parts of the mouth, but a bridge only replaces consecutive teeth.
  • Immediate Dentures: Sometimes, we need to remove problem teeth before denture treatment. If you have severely infected or impacted teeth that will affect your restoration, we will recommend a tooth extraction. Then, we can place an immediate denture so you will not be without teeth as you heal.
  • Overdenture: An overdenture is a full denture that is either removable or permanent with dental implants. Implant-retained dentures “snap in” to the dental implants in the mouth. Alternatively, implant-supported dentures permanently sit in place. We typically recommend implant-supported dentures for the best long-term results.

The custom dentures we create for you will only fit your mouth. We do not provide one-size-fits-all options to give you the most comfortable fit.

Dentures and Partials in Asheville, NC

Patients missing a full mouth of teeth can experience a restored mouth with our denture solutions. We create dentures and partials based on digital impressions of your soft tissues. This ensures that your finished prosthetic teeth will compliment your facial structure like your natural teeth once did.

When you receive your dentures, our doctors will review their maintenance requirements so that you know how to care for your new teeth. This includes how to clean your set of teeth using denture cleaning products properly. Caring for your dentures is easy.

You must soak removable dentures to keep them moist, as dried-out dentures lose shape. Traditional toothpaste is too harsh for dentures because it can damage them over time. If you receive implant-supported dentures, we will recommend a solution to keep them clean.

What are Implant-Supported Dentures?

A common complaint with denture-wearers is denture slippage. This occurs when the prosthetic teeth move around in your mouth while in use. To prevent denture slippage, we recommend implant-supported dentures. Implant-supported dentures use the strength of dental implants to supply additional support to your dentures while in use.

A few dental implants can anchor your dentures to your mouth more effectively. Talk to our dentist to learn more about how dental implants can improve the function of your dentures.

The Benefits of Implant Dentures

Affordable dentures implants come with a host of benefits. When implants secure your dentures, they stop the bone in that area from deteriorating. Typically, the patient will need to adjust or replace their dentures periodically.

Traditional dentures don’t stop the jawbone from degenerating. The fit continues to change over time because your mouth continues to change. However, implant-supported dentures don’t have this problem.

Implant-supported dentures give you back more of your bite capacity as well. Traditional dentures rely on suction and adhesive to stay in the mouth. Certain foods are difficult to eat with these dentures and can shift and move them.

However, implant dentures aren’t removable and stay in your mouth by design. Since implants fuse with your jawbone, the dentures aren’t going to shift or budge when you bite into hard foods.

Lastly, implant dentures don’t need as much maintenance as removable ones. You brush and floss them like you would your normal teeth. Traditional dentures require you to take them out every night to clean them. If you have a removable denture, you must soak your dentures nightly. You may also need a special brush to clean off the denture adhesive properly.

Using Implants for Dentures and Partials

Dental implants may add time to your treatment, but implant-secured dentures are easy to care for and long-lasting. As with other restorations, we will ensure you are a good candidate before treatment.

Depending on your oral health, we may recommend extractions, gum disease treatment, or bone grafting. Bone grafting is a procedure that adds healthy jaw bone to the mouth. If you experience jaw bone recession but want implants, we will perform a bone graft to ensure you are an implant candidate.

After this preparation, we will schedule the implant surgery. We may place one or more implants based on your type of denture. When we place the implants, we strategically place the titanium post in the jaw bone. Then, we place a healing cap.

You will receive your permanent denture after three to six months of healing. We use a lab to custom-make the denture from dental impressions.

You do not need to remove your dentures if you receive implant-supported dentures. In fact, you can brush and floss your dentures as you would natural teeth.

To maintain your implant-supported denture, brush and floss twice daily. You may find it easier to use a water flosser than traditional waxed floss. However, we can teach you the best technique to floss on and around the denture. After flossing, brush your dentures with a soft-bristled brush and a non-abrasive solution.
